In the middle of
the nineties the only music you could hear on radio
in Bremen was a mixture of Rage Against Red Hot Kravitz in Nirvana.
No radio station would provide good British music that had delighted
our ears for decades. That is when Popscene was born. Launched on
the 16th of December 1994 at 14:05 hours. The show lasted 25 mins
on OK Radio Bremen/Radio Weser and featured indie LoFi music.
Happily from then you could listen to bands that were never played
on the radio in Germany. Among these bands were Pulp, Stone Roses,
Oasis, Lush,Boo Radleys. Pale Saints. Popscene is a one man project,
and a one man show. It was entirely created, managed and kept alive
by Jalal.
On the 3rd of February 1995 at 15:05 hours Popscene became a
55 minute show. The show aimed to make the auditors discover new
bands |
new
sounds and
from that moment would introduce more innovative bands than it used
to :
Marion, Ash, Secret Goldfish, Electrafixion, Menswear, Hopper. The show
also let space
to forgotten bands of the early nineties such as Ride, Secret Shine,
Heavenly, Goodnight Said Florence, Blind Mr Jones, Stone Roses.
Among the bands interviewed on Popscene until 1998, some still were
newcomers, others were already
famous and others would never be famous later, but many became big
afterwards. They all had the
common point to be clever. Some of the bands interviewed on
Popscene: Suede, Supergrass, Salad,
Catherine Wheel, Sleeper, Adventures In Stereo, Andy Bell (Ride,
Hurricane#1, Oasis), Secret Goldfish,
Pulp, Boo Radleys, Menswear, Ash, Super Furry Animals, Catatonia,
Jesus & Mary Chain, Placebo, Scheer, Divine Comedy, His Name Is
Alive, Slipstream, Stereolab to name a few.
The interviews felt boring in 1998, then it was over.
Practically you can listen to Popscene every Friday live on the
radio FM if you are around Bremen.
You may also download it every week from the Popscene website:

::: GAZING : the
indie video show ::: |
|
[1995 - 1997] |
 |
In 1995 Jalal
also created an indie video show, named Gazing.
The Gazing show lasted 2 years, it was aired on OK TV Bremen
from July 1995 until July 1997. The concept was the same as
Popscene,
there again it introduced bands you would never see anywhere
else on TV, in a total
independent way. At that time, one show was roughly similar
to Gazing, MTV Europe's
Alternative Nation, but the huge difference was that the MTV
show would present the
indie Top 20 only! Frankly, where else you could possibily
see videos from the likes of
Chapterhouse, Puressence, Hopper, CatatoniaRevolver,
Adventures In Stereo ... back in 95/97 ?!?
Jalal: It was really a right decision to stop the show
then despite the fact that many would
be disappointed by 'the sudden death' of GAZING! |
